“The Eye-Opener”

Lions Roar has posted a short film, “The Eye-Opener,” directed by François Schick. It portrays an artist at work painting an arhat sculpture, concluding with the the final strokes: painting in the pupils and eye details. In Buddhist art, the “eye-opening” is the act by the artist imbuing life into the created work: essentially, turning the inanimate artwork into a living being. “Traditionally, the eyes of the deities were left for the last so they cold be painted in at a special celebration called “opening the eyes.””
